Lombok, 2-6 Agustus 2015 - RiangRiaBlog

After experiencing month end in july, we started this month with a(nother) honeymoon to Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. Needless to say, this was an impulsive trip my husband initiated for us.

Lombok has been an alternative destination for any tourists going to Indonesia due to its location and its beauty. The island is surrounded by smaller islands locally called Gili. Lombok tourism offers you similar experience with Bali, although unlike Bali, in Lombok you may find more women covered in hijab and halal food as majority of the people are moslems.

These are top and best destinations you must visit in Lombok (especially when you are in a tight schedule like us but want to visit most of Lombok) :

1. Sukarara Village
Traditional weaving village at Lombok island will give you one of a kind experience in your holiday.. Learn to weave with the traditional tools as these ladies are doing for their daily activities. You can also wear traditional Sukarara clothing and take photos with their traditional buildings. There is no entrance fee to enter Sukarara village. If you are lucky, you may find lots of Lomboknese wedding and you can watch them for free :)

2. Waterfalls
Tiu Kelep and Sendang Gile waterfalls are exactly my own main reasons going to Lombok. Located in Senaru village at the northern Lombok, the air so cool and refreshing because it sits on the foot of Rindjani mountain. i personally am a waterfall lovers, especially the one you can swim in. Best to wear your diving shoes, or mountain sandals, or even regular sandals when you are going to the waterfalls, as the journey contains crossing the rivers, stepping on steep stones, and swimming under the waterfalls (oh dont forget small pointy rocks that feels like stepping on legos). it took approximately 15 minutes to the waterfall, and all the exhaust feeling will disappear once you swim in the pool right under the waterfall of Sendang Gile waterfall. Entrance fee is 10,000 IDR ~ less than 1 USD

 3. Bayan Beleq, the Oldest Mosque
After visiting the waterfalls, not too far from there, you can visit the first mosque in Lombok. as the majority of the Lombok people are moslems, the ancient mosque holds a special place in the heart of Lombok people. these wooden traditional mosque looks very similar to the houses of Lombok people and only open for public at special occasion for ceremonies. Fortunately, we get to peek inside the mosque to see what its like when the Sunan that promotes Islam for the first time in Lombok preach and discuss about Islam in this mosque. No entrance fee to enter this mosque, you can just donate voluntarily at the mosque caretaker.

4. Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, Gili Meno
These are the top celebrities in terms of island in Lombok. these trios are located in western part of Lombok just above the Senggigi.. Gili Trawangan is the largest and furthest island of the trio, but also the most crowded as the main attraction is centered in Gili Trawangan. no motorbikes or cars are allowed here. only bicycle, or Cidomo (horse-drawn carts) or simply walk to explore the island. Snorkeling in Gili Trawangan is not recommended as the current is too strong and the fish is not so abundant. i would recommend other gili. I would say Gili Trawangan has become another tourist-y spot as it is also very crowded. On the other side, you can find most of the attractions here, like scuba diving, jet ski, kayak, marine walk, resorts, restaurants, and ATM here in Gili Trawangan.

4. Gili Nanggu, Gili Tangkong, Gili Kedis
Not many people are aware of the beauty of these Gili. Quiet, Serene place... They seem to enjoy being under the shadow of the great trio : Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, Gili Meno. We were the only local tourists to visit here, and the total of boats coming are only less than 10. Gili Nanggu is our first destination. We went snorkeling at this biggest island. The current were not so strong and the fish varieties were far more abundant than Gili trawangan. Gili Tangkong is the place where we eat locally grilled Mahi-mahi fish with rice and sambal (cost around 100K IDR ~ 10 USD). The last one, Gili Sudak is a very small island, you can walk around the island in less than 250 steps (yes, we did count our steps).

5. Taman Narmada
Narmada Park used to be the royal park and built in 1727 by King Mataram Lombok himself as a palace during the draught season. it is 2 hectares and consists of large pools and a pura for spiritual ceremonies. it is located 10 km from Mataram and a very popular destination in Lombok.

6. Culinary tour
Well, your Lombok experience will not be complete without going through some of traditional local cuisines right? Try Ayam Taliwang, spicy chicken which has been Lombok specialties for decades. in Mataram, you will find many restaurants serving them. Nasi Balap Puyung, is the local cuisines near the airport. you can also order Bebalung, a hearty rich-filled-with-fats-ribs-clear-soup that i-oh-so-love. Try also the local grilled fish near the beaches. While you soak in the sunset experience, you can enjoy the fish and drink coconut water.

Well, unfortunately our holiday is over, we have to recharge our bank account for another vacation.. see you in another post! ciao!
